EUniverCities Network: the practical case of Aveiro

EUniverCities is a European network, launched in 2012, in which medium-sized cities and universities work together in order to give greater visibility to the Cities of Knowledge within Europe. The Aveiro City Council integrates this network which aims at the exchange and dissemination of knowledge, good practices and experiences on the cooperation between Cities and Universities.

On 2 December 2021, at the Teatro Regio di Parma, Italy, the EUniverCities Network presented its handbook on strategic cooperation between Cities and Universities in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Network. The content of this document is the result of a series of three online workshops and of the contributions of the members through short and concise case studies on their own practices.

Aveiro presents the implementation of Tech Labs in all schools of the Municipality resulting from collaborative work with the University of Aveiro.

Worldwide, there is a growing recognition that strategic partnerships between Cities and Universities can bring substantial benefits for both parties. The difficulty lies in how to organise such partnerships successfully. The handbook offers insights, best practice and advice to city and university leaders who want to take the next step towards a strategic and sustainable partnership. It identifies promising avenues, but also barriers and how they can be avoided. Illustrated by a wealth of examples from European cities, the handbook also provides concrete advice on the various stages of strategic city-university collaboration.

This handbook is the culmination of a work started in 2019 at the initiative of Lausanne (City and University) and coordinated by the Secretariat of Parma (City and University), with the aim of describing the state of the art of the collaboration models currently in use. It was co-developed by the members of the EUniverCities Network and edited by Willem van Winden as leading expert of the Network.

Divided into three parts, the first part offers insights and guidance for establishing collaborations; the second part contains detailed case studies that were analysed in depth during three online workshops. The third part contains a collection of case studies written by members of the EUniverCities Network, including the practical case implemented in the Municipality of Aveiro.

The Municipality of Aveiro and the University of Aveiro are active members of this Network since its foundation in 2012.
