59 Applicants from all over the world

- Aveiro Urban Challenges e Aveiro 5G Challenges -

 

The Aveiro Urban Challenges and Aveiro 5G Challenges challenges received a total of 59 applications from 26 countries. Within the next days, the organisation of both programme will conclude the selection of finalists and prepare the Kick-off event for the 2nd edition of these initiatives. The selected projects will have free access to Aveiro Tech City Living Lab and a specialized training program, organized in partnership with Beta-i, an international company dedicated to acceleration and mentoring programs.

Focused on start-ups, scale-ups and R&D institutions, the Aveiro Urban Challenges and Aveiro 5G Challenges programs, promoted by the City of Aveiro (CMA) aims to distinguish the most disruptive technological solutions. In this 2nd edition, the total amount of prizes for the two challenges is 195.000,00€.

 

Aveiro Urban Challenges

The majority of the 30 applications received come from foreigner companies. The UK with 4 applications and Germany and Italy with 3 applications each are the most represented nations of applications coming from across borders. To mark an application from the United States of America (USA). In Europe, countries like Spain, Croatia, Greece and Switzerland are also worth mentioning, with one application each. The remaining 14 applications are from Portugal.

From then 30 projects, up to 25 will move on to the next phase, the Aveiro Tech City Pitch, which takes place on April 23rd. In the end we will have 5 finalists, one for each of challenge. Each finalist will receive 20 thousand euros to support the development of the projects. The scope of the challenges are:

 

1. Intelligent Management of Users and Visitors

2. Inclusive tourist guide

3. Flood Management

4. Edge Computing for urban mobility in LIDAR sensors

5. European Capital of Culture 2027challenge.

 

Aveiro 5G Challenge

The Aveiro 5G Challenges received 29 applications - 3 candidacies from Germany and United Kingdom, 2 applications from the USA and one application from other 12 countries, such as Kenya, Finland, Croatia and others.

From these 29 projects, the organisation will choose the ten most disruptive projects using 5G network of the local ecosystem, managed by the partners Altice Labs and Ericsson.

The three best solutions will be awarded with 25 thousand euros each. It should be noted that, during the testing and experimentation phase, the ten candidates for Aveiro 5G Challenges can use the 5G infrastructure installed throughout the city of Aveiro. The three winners will be selected in October 2021 during Aveiro Tech Week.

 

Aveiro Urban Challenges and Aveiro 5G Challenges represent just two of the many activities developed under the Aveiro Tech City project. In partnership with Altice Labs, the Telecommunications Institute and the University of Aveiro, Aveiro offers a Living Lab that includes, among other features, an experimental 5G network - one of the few 5G trial Cities in Europe where statups, scaleups and R&D centers can develop and commercially scale their solutions.

 

The Aveiro STEAM City project is co-financed by the Regional Development Fund - FEDER, through the Urban Innovative Actions program. Its global investment is € 6,115,915 with ERDF support € 4,892,732.
